Hello, I'm Julie, Founder of Know it Out Loud.
I'm a communications strategist focused on sustaining research through engagement and fundraising. Get it visible so it stays viable!
I partner with individuals and institutions who are advancing knowledge from the humanities to the hard sciences, including colleges, universities, institutes, labs and startups.
I have 25 years of experience creating award-winning communications in university, creative agency, and entrepreneurial settings, including 15 years as a senior development communicator at major research universities. I'm a nationally recognized speaker on advancement communications strategy and have co-authored peer-reviewed research on engaging academics in university brand adoption.
Prior to my career in higher education, my energy and passion was focused on being a communications pioneer and founder of two tech startups: HotWired, the Web’s first commercial magazine and a subsidiary of Wired magazine, and ShopTok, a suite of community-driven ecommerce applications that attracted $6M in first-round funding. I thrive in a space where good ideas are transformed into commercial and charitable opportunities, and I have a track record of leading creative and technical teams in the development of innovative digital products.
Engaging in my lifelong calling to create clear, compelling communication that connects (and alliterates), I've transformed thousands of ideas into persuasive narrative for every audience and purpose including raising millions of dollars for academic and private enterprise, elevating the street cred of exceptional scholars and indie thinkers and translating geekspeak for early adopters. My writing has appeared in Wired, Mother Jones, print and digital tech publications, daily newspapers and numerous in-house publications. I holds a B.A. and M.A. from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
Contributing to a connected, healthy, and flourishing world, I enjoy giving back to my community as a board member for the TEDx Mile High Adventures program and an advisor to the Alt-E Fund, a startup non-profit building grassroots financial support for clean energy basic research. My downtime is a mix of long-distance road biking with my wife and my Moots (titanium bicycle handbuilt in the Rockies), collecting old jazz records, and home brewing Kombucha. My latest infusion is serrano pepper + blood orange + persimmon.
